He was, I understand, specially allowed to take over certain Insur- -ance Agencies in this Colony formerly held by his firm.

I an informed he now intends to open an Agency in

Canton and engage in a general commission business.

Mr. X. A. Hannibal. To quote one of my Canton friends this is "the most scandalous of all the cases". He was of course referring to the Canton side of the business.

I would mention that Hr. F. A. Wendt is a very old. friend of mine and when the German firms were closed he called on

me to say Good-bye. I asked hin how matters stood, as Mr. Harmibal had given me te understand he had purchased Wendt and Company's business. Mr. Wendt said that was not quite the case, but Mr. Hannibal had taken over the business and was going to try to make what he could out of it. In reply to further question Mr. Wendt stated he was proceeding through the States to Copenhagen and thence would go on to his home in Holstein.

Since then, however, Mr. Tendt has returned to New York where he is acting as Mr. Hannibal's correspondent. As regards the Canton branch, this is still known as Tendt and Company, and is in charge of a Hellander, Mr. G. E. Huygen, who formerly signed per procuration for the old firm. This is the person who my Canton informants state is doing the business formerly carried on by Wendt & Co. and is keenly competing with British Merchants.

Mr. A. X. Snowman. This gentleman, who claims to be a British born subject, was formerly a prominent member of the German Community with whom he associated; indeed he lived in a "mess" with other Germans. He now is in charge of Messra. Lamke & Rogge's freight business.

Mr. G. Martini was a commission agent in a small way of business prior to the outbreak of the war. Since then he has en- -larged his business both in South China and the Philippines, and there is good reason to believe he also is taking up business formerly done by Germans, and is probably acting for others in the background.

I may perhaps add that information has been received
